The workshop behind the name
Our archive places Thumb and Jagard in the history of Terada and Japanese domestic guitar brands. These less familiar names offer another route into the acoustic instruments of the 1970s and 1980s, alongside internationally recognised brands.
A range of designs
The original guide discusses Thumb’s smaller F-series instruments, W-series dreadnoughts and designs inspired by Gibson’s Hummingbird. For Jagard it introduces the JD family and other acoustic models. The exact designation and period remain essential when comparing specifications.
Laminates and ornamentation
Do not infer an all-solid construction from decorative binding or inlays. The archive describes different material and price levels. Check each panel individually and assess the instrument’s actual resonance, setup and condition rather than using ornamentation as a quality ranking.
Finding a player’s instrument
A less familiar name can make the research more rewarding, but it also makes careful documentation useful. Ask for label photographs and repair details, and compare the guitar with appropriate catalogue material. Neck angle, fret condition and bridge integrity remain central to a comfortable playing experience.
