Labels and model designations
Label colour, lettering and the serial number can help place an instrument in context. They should be read together, not used as a single shortcut to an exact year or construction. A familiar FG designation does not by itself establish the top, back and side materials of every version.
Construction before reputation
Compare the particular guitar with period specifications. Check whether each panel is solid or laminated, identify the body size and inspect the bridge and neck geometry. Avoid transferring the specifications of a celebrated model to another instrument with a similar name.
Buying a vintage Yamaha
Ask about action, remaining saddle height, fret condition and previous structural repairs. With electric guitars, include electronics and hardware in the inspection. A carefully documented, well-set-up example is more informative than a broad claim about a label or decade.
