Fresher: brand history, Straighter guitars and Japanese vintage basses
Kyowa’s Nagoya brand combined familiar guitars and basses with ambitious electronics. Fresher’s history goes well beyond its Fender-like lettering.
1973: Fresher arrives in Nagoya
Kyowa introduced Fresher in Nagoya in 1973. Michael Wright’s research, assisted by Japanese editor Hiroyuki Noguchi, identifies the Matsumoto Musical Instrument Manufacturers’ Association as an early builder, distinct from Matsumoku. He dates the effects guitars to 1977 and the end of Fresher production to 1985.

Familiar designs and a broad range
The surviving late-1970s catalogue ranges beyond ST-style guitars: FL single-cut models, compact FN designs and semi-hollows appear alongside several bass layouts. For today’s player, that means familiar construction under a less prominent name.

Five effects inside the guitar
FS-1007, FL-1005 and FF-1003 models carried onboard phase shifting, auto-wah, distortion, sustain and boost functions, plus bypass switching. Familiar body shapes housed an ambitious effects system. These designs show Fresher pursuing its own ideas alongside simpler guitars and basses.

Straighter: familiar shapes, different specifications
Our Straighter ST examples date from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Alongside traditional three-single-coil guitars, Olympic White E26041 has later rail humbuckers at the neck and bridge, with a middle single-coil.

Personal Bass: a straightforward working instrument
Our sunburst Personal Bass B25159 is listed as dating from 1977–1980. It has a passive split-coil circuit and received new Medium frets in our service department. That documented work is more useful to a buyer than the word “vintage” alone. Try the neck profile, weight and response through your own setup.
