Which electric guitar should you start with? Choose one you can grow with

Choose a guitar that makes you want to play

Start with an instrument that is comfortable, works properly and suits the music you enjoy. It need not carry a beginner label. With PLN 3,000–4,000 available for the guitar itself, a well-prepared Japanese electric can be a long-term choice from the beginning.

In our view, that is a stronger approach than choosing a guitar simply because it is new and bundled with accessories. A good Fresher or Yamaha gives you room to develop without planning an obligatory replacement after the first year. Let comfort and your musical needs guide the decision.

Do you have to learn on an acoustic first?

If electric guitar is what you want to play, you can start there. Acoustic and classical guitars are different instruments, not compulsory stages before an electric. The sound that motivates you to practise is a useful starting point.

Bring a few favourite songs to mind before visiting the shop. Even if you cannot play them yet, they help us demonstrate relevant sounds. You do not need to know every pickup or bridge name. Take time to sit with the guitar and find out whether its body and neck feel comfortable.

Preparation matters from the first chord

Excessive effort under your fingers, sharp fret ends and notes that choke can discourage a beginner more than basic electronics. We check first-position chords, playing further up the neck and the response to an ordinary picking attack. The setup needs to suit the strings and the player.

A new guitar may also need adjustment after transport, environmental changes or personalisation. That does not mean every new instrument needs restoration, but every guitar deserves a check. With a prepared used example, you can discuss the work and its actual setup.

Three single coils or a humbucker?

An SSS layout is an interesting starting point for clean sounds, blues, funk and classic rock. A bridge humbucker can be useful for stronger overdrive. These are starting points rather than strict genre assignments: the amplifier and your playing matter too.

Try clean sounds and moderate gain. Heavy effects can hide differences. You need not use every switch position immediately; a few appealing, useful sounds are more valuable than a long list of functions.

Fresher Straighter ST: a traditional option at PLN 3,200

Our Vintage White Straighter ST has a maple neck and fingerboard with three single-coil pickups. Its price, checked on 13 September 2026, is PLN 3,200 including the preparation described before handover. It is a candidate for someone who wants a traditional ST and room to develop a personal style.

The Olympic White Modified example, also PLN 3,200, has rail humbuckers at the neck and bridge with a middle single coil. That makes it worth comparing if you are interested in stronger sounds. Check the current preparation stage in each listing.

Yamaha SR400S: look beyond the Pacifica shortlist

If your search began with the Yamaha Pacifica, also consider the older SR400S Super R’n’roller. Our example has three single coils, a rosewood fingerboard and a traditional tremolo. At PLN 3,600 with the listed preparation included, we consider it a strong alternative to a new electric.

For a beginner, its age is less important than how it feels once prepared. Can you form chords comfortably? Does its sound make you want to try again? Vintage character is appealing, but playing comfort is something you assess with the guitar in your hands.

Keep the first setup manageable

You do not have to use a tremolo arm immediately. Ask us to demonstrate the bridge and tuning procedure. If considering a more complex locking system, include string changes and everyday handling in your decision.

Reserve part of the total budget for an amplifier or headphone practice setup, a cable and a tuner. Get to know the existing pickups before planning replacements. A comfortable instrument and regular practice are the most useful starting combination.
