Yamaha SR400S Super R'n'roller is a Japanese electric guitar, manufactured at the turn of the 70s and 80s at the Nippon Gakki factory. This model is a faithful replica of American ST designs, referencing classic projects from the 50s and 60s. The unit features a 3-Tone Sunburst finish and a rosewood fingerboard. According to the information above, the instrument is currently being prepared and will undergo a comprehensive luthier overhaul before the final handover.

Technical specification

Body and construction The solid ST-shaped body features a 3-Tone Sunburst finish. A traditional Bolt-on neck construction is used. A three-ply, bright pickguard is mounted on the front, contrasting with the yellowed plastic pickup covers and potentiometer knobs. In accordance with the pre-sale conditions, the lacquer coating will undergo a cleaning and polishing process in our workshop.

Neck and ergonomics The maple neck has a standard profile and is topped with a classic, small headstock referencing the 50s and 60s design. The neck is paired with a rosewood fingerboard equipped with bright dot inlays. Depending on the verification of the neck geometry, the original frets will undergo advanced dressing and polishing, or – if fingerboard leveling is necessary – the instrument will receive brand new frets. This will ensure proper intonation and appropriate string action across the entire neck.

Sound The instrument is equipped with a passive circuit of three factory Yamaha single-coil pickups.

  • Characteristics: The three single-coil configuration combined with a rosewood fingerboard generates a balanced frequency response with an even attack, legible midrange, and preserved clarity of high tones.

  • Dynamics: The passive circuit responds efficiently to articulation and the operation of the volume potentiometer, allowing work on both clean signals and with classic overdrives.

Additional information

  • The Super R'n'roller series is the historical response of the Nippon Gakki factory to the Japanese market, replicating classic American ST instruments.

  • The lack of an external serial number on the back of the headstock or the neck joint is a phenomenon encountered in parts of the production intended exclusively for the Japanese domestic market (JDM), where identification was based on stamps inside the neck pocket.

  • The naturally yellowed plastics (pickup covers and potentiometers) emphasize the authentic age of the instrument, which is over 40 years old.

  • The guitar is offered in a pre-sale formula, which allows you to reserve this unit even before the full process of luthier work is finally completed.

Hardware

  • Bridge: Vintage Synchronized Tremolo – a traditional construction mounted on six screws. According to the scope of work, the hardware will undergo maintenance and full intonation adjustment.

  • Tuners: Closed mechanisms (Covered Gear) – a traditional construction with vintage-style stamped metal covers. The chrome hardware will be thoroughly cleaned and lubricated to ensure tuning stability and smooth operation.
