K. Yairi: guitar history and Japanese craftsmanship

History, identification and an approach to Japanese acoustic guitar making.

Read the complete name

The Yairi name needs careful identification. K. Yairi, S. Yairi and instruments marketed under other related names should not automatically be treated as one maker or specification. Our original article follows the history of K. Yairi and the workshop tradition behind its acoustic guitars.

Materials and construction

Look at the specifications of the actual model, rather than assuming that every guitar from a respected workshop has the same construction. The choice of solid or laminated components, body dimensions and bracing is part of the design of each instrument.

Dating and documentation

Photograph the label, serial number and any internal markings. Compare them with a reliable reference for that particular series. Changes in export naming and different model families can make a simple name-based comparison misleading.

The instrument as it plays today

Inspect neck geometry, fret wear, bridge adhesion and any previous repairs. Evaluate comfort with the string gauge and tuning you intend to use. Our listings explain the service carried out on the individual guitar; ask us if you need additional detail before choosing.
