It will undergo luthier work, including, among other things, polishing of the finish, refurbishment of the metal parts and shielding of the electronics. Depending on the assessment of the neck geometry, the original frets will receive an advanced levelling and polishing, or – if levelling (planing) of the fingerboard proves necessary – the instrument will receive a completely new set of frets. About the instrument
The Fernandes PJR-45 is a Japanese bass guitar from 1985. The model combines a Jazz Bass-outline body with a P/J pickup configuration (a split-coil pickup in the neck position and a single-coil at the bridge) and passive electronics with two Volume potentiometers and a shared Tone. The instrument presented here has a Vintage White finish, a basswood body, a maple neck and a rosewood fingerboard with Medium Jumbo frets. Fernandes is a Japanese brand founded in 1969 in Tokyo as Saito Gakki (the Fernandes name was adopted in 1972); in 1981 the company introduced the Revival series – replicas of Fender instruments. The PJR-45 model appears in Fernandes catalogues from 1985–1987 and is a Jazz Bass-outline bass with a P/J pickup configuration, a response to the Japanese P/J designs popular in that period, such as the Fender Jazz Bass Special from the Boxer series. The instrument is currently being prepared and will undergo the scheduled luthier service in our workshop before being released.

Body and construction
The solid Jazz Bass-outline body is made of basswood. The instrument has a Vintage White lacquer finish. A traditional Bolt-on construction with the classic four-bolt neck joint is used. In line with the terms of the pre-sale, the finish and wooden components will be cleaned and polished in our workshop, and the electronics cavities will be shielded.
Neck and playability
The maple neck is paired with a rosewood fingerboard. The Medium Jumbo frets are original. Depending on the assessment of the neck geometry, the original frets will undergo a thorough levelling and polishing, or – should the fingerboard require levelling (planing) – the instrument will receive entirely new frets. This will ensure correct intonation and appropriate string action along the entire length of the fingerboard. The fingerboard surface will be cleaned and conditioned.
Sound
The instrument is fitted with a two-pickup configuration: a split-coil pickup (Split-Coil) in the neck position and a single-coil (Single-Coil) at the bridge – the factory P/J set – in a passive circuit with two Volume potentiometers and a shared Tone.
Character: The PJ configuration combines the frequency response typical of a Split-Coil pickup with the ability to blend in the bridge pickup. The basswood body and independent volume control for both pickups make it possible to obtain both a tone close to the classic PB and a more defined sound with the bridge pickup contributing.
Dynamics: The passive electronics respond proportionally to the force of articulation. The scheduled servicing of the circuit and shielding of the electronics cavities will reduce susceptibility to ambient noise.
Additional information
Fernandes did not have its own factory and outsourced production to Japanese OEM manufacturers – the literature mentions Tokai Gakki, Dyna Gakki and Matsumoku, among others; the factory in which this particular PJR-45 was made is not documented.
The PJR-45 model appears in the Fernandes catalogue from January 1985 and in the 1987 catalogue; in the 1988 catalogue it was replaced by the PJ-45 and PJS-42 models. Pickups marked VPB-2 / VJB-2 are found in examples from this period.
Most Fernandes instruments from this period do not have date-coded serial numbers, so dating relies mainly on catalogues, the logo and potentiometer codes.
The bass is offered on a pre-sale basis, which allows this particular instrument to be reserved before the full luthier work in our workshop has been completed.
