Yamaki FP-20 is a Japanese acoustic guitar, manufactured around 1975 at the Yamaki Daion factory. The instrument is based on a Grand Concert body shape (often classified in Japan during that period as Folk). The guitar features a spruce top plate and rosewood back and sides. After our service work, which included fingerboard leveling, refretting, and the installation of a proprietary passive pickup system, the instrument is ready to play.

Body and construction The Grand Concert-shaped soundbox features a top plate made of spruce, with the back and sides made of rosewood. The instrument is finished with a clear lacquer (Natural). Inside the soundbox, a traditional bracing system is used. A standard glued neck construction (Set-Neck) is applied. In our workshop, the lacquer coating went through a cleaning and waxing process.
Neck and ergonomics The mahogany neck features a profile similar to a "C" shape. The neck is paired with a rosewood fingerboard. The scale length is 640 mm, and the nut width is 43 mm. As part of the service work, the old frets were removed, the fingerboard was leveled, and brand new Medium size frets were installed. A new nut made of natural bone was also fitted. The fingerboard surface was cleaned and conditioned.
Sound The instrument is enriched with a proprietary, passive amplification system (acoustic pickup) mounted inside the body.
Characteristics: The use of a spruce top and rosewood back and sides in a smaller Grand Concert body generates a balanced frequency response with clear mids and a controlled bottom end.
Dynamics: The guitar responds appropriately to varied articulation strength. The installed passive pickup allows for the direct transfer of acoustic vibrations to sound equipment without the use of battery power.

The Yamaki brand was known in the 1970s for producing acoustic instruments structurally based on proven American designs.
The top plate of this unit exhibits a bulge around the bridge area (belly bulge), which is a common physical phenomenon resulting from years of string tension in older acoustic instruments.
The bridge profile indicates that it was shaved (lowered) in the past – this is a standard luthier procedure aimed at compensating for the top bulge and allowing for the setup of proper string action.
The service work we performed included: fingerboard leveling, complete refretting, crafting a bone nut, installing a passive pickup, and setting the string action.
Hardware
Bridge: Rosewood – the bridge bears signs of historical lowering (shaving). It features a custom-made saddle crafted from natural bone in our workshop.
Tuners: Closed-gear mechanisms. The chrome hardware went through a cleaning process and retains its mechanical efficiency.
Instrument condition
Technical condition: The instrument is mechanically functional after a luthier verification. The truss rod works properly, and the frets are brand new. The top plate has a bulge (belly bulge) compensated by the lowered bridge.
Visual condition: The guitar shows signs of use appropriate for its age (around 50 years). Minor dings and scratches are visible on the lacquer coating. The instrument has no structural wood cracks.
Setup and Modifications: A proprietary passive pickup was installed. Refretting, crafting a bone nut, fingerboard leveling, and a setup of the string action were performed.
