Über dieses Instrument
Diese Instrumentenbeschreibung ist derzeit auf Englisch verfügbar.
Marina Profile Bass PJ is a bass guitar, manufactured at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s at the Chuan Yin Musical Instruments Co. Ltd. factory (Taiwan). The shape and body layout draw from the solutions of the Japanese Boxer series. The instrument is distinguished by the use of an inverted pickup (Reverse P). In our workshop, the guitar underwent comprehensive modifications, which were the main goal of restoring this unit: the body received a new lacquer coating in Silver Metallic (refinish), and the passive circuit was replaced with an active EMG pickup set. Additionally, fingerboard leveling was performed, and the frets were replaced, ensuring the instrument is fully ready to play.
Technical specification
Manufacturer: Marina
Model: Profile Bass PJ
Year of production: Late 80s/Early 90s
Body: Alder
Neck: Maple – black lacquer
Fingerboard: Rosewood
Frets: Medium (Condition: 100% – new)
Pickups: Active EMG P/J Set (Reverse P)
Electronics: Active
Visual condition: Very good (details in description)
Finish: Silver Metallic
Weight: (to be completed)
Body and construction The solid body is made of alder. The instrument's shape features deeper cutaways around the neck joint, facilitating access to the higher frets. A traditional Bolt-on neck construction is used. In our workshop, the body underwent a refinishing process in Silver Metallic, which constitutes our custom modification. The new lacquer coating has been polished and protected with wax.
Neck and ergonomics The maple neck is entirely covered in black lacquer. The neck is paired with a rosewood fingerboard. As part of the service work, the old frets were removed, the fingerboard was leveled, and brand new Medium size frets were installed. The fingerboard surface was cleaned and conditioned. The appropriate geometry allowed for a precise string action setup.
Sound The instrument has been modified by us through the installation of a modern, active EMG pickup set in a P/J layout.
Characteristics: The active circuit offers a high-output signal with a very low level of inherent noise. The inverted position of the P pickup (Reverse P) gives the bass strings a brighter attack, while the treble strings sound fuller.
Dynamics: The active electronics, combined with a properly adjusted bridge pickup (J), respond to strong articulation, offering a balanced signal level during fast picking or fingerstyle playing.
Additional information
[1] Information regarding the Taiwanese origin of the Marina brand and production at the Chuan Yin Musical Instruments Co. Ltd. factory is based on the manufacturer's archival catalogs and verification on discussion forums and databases gathering collectors of Asian gear from this period.
[2] The use of an inverted Split-Coil pickup (Reverse P) modifies the frequency response compared to a classic Precision Bass layout, physically balancing the sound between the strings.
[3] The active EMG pickup set and the new body finish installed by us are the main modifications that change the instrument's parameters to a standard similar to modern studio tools.
[4] The service work we performed included: a new body lacquer (refinish), complete refretting, fingerboard leveling, hardware maintenance, and the installation and configuration of the EMG electronics.
Hardware
Bridge: Vintage Style – a massive construction finished in black that has undergone a cleaning process, allowing for proper intonation adjustment.
Tuners: Closed-gear mechanisms – the black hardware maintains tuning stability and mechanical efficiency.
Instrument condition
Technical condition: The instrument is mechanically and electronically functional after a luthier verification. The truss rod works properly, the frets are brand new, and the installed active circuit operates without interference.
Visual condition: The guitar is preserved in very good visual condition after the body refinish performed by us. Natural, minor signs of use appropriate for the instrument's age are present on the original black lacquer of the neck.
Setup and Modifications: Our custom modifications include a body refinish (Silver Metallic) and pickup replacement to an active EMG circuit. Furthermore, a refretting (Medium), fingerboard leveling, and a full setup of the string action and intonation were performed.
Why choose this instrument
Active EMG pickups: This module provides a strong, noise-free signal, desired in modern studio recording sessions.
Reverse P layout: A solution known from boutique instruments, modifying the classic sound characteristics for a more balanced frequency response.
Refreshed look: The silver refinish performed in our workshop aesthetically contrasts with the original black hardware and black neck.
New frets and leveling: The fret replacement to Medium size eliminates problems associated with the use of old instruments and ensures proper intonation.
